Sylvania 300 Information
The Sylvania 300, one of NASCAR's most exciting events, has always been held in mid-September, being rescheduled only once in its history. Plans for the Sylvania 300 to run on September 16, 2001, were scrapped due to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. But ever since, NASCAR fans have been beating down the door to fill the stands at the New Hampshire International Speedway, clutching their Sylvania 300 tickets.
After a horrible accident in 2000, the Nextel Cup series of NASCAR implemented a rule that restrictor plates must be on all race cars. After deaths occurred in both the Busch Series practice and the Cup Series practice, NASCAR implemented the use of restrictor plates for the 2000 Cup race. The restrictor plates achieved their purpose too well. The cars were slower, but the reduced power prevented other cars from passing the leader. NASCAR had to rethink their strategy for safety and for the continuation of the sport and weighed the two options. With drivers and fans longing for high speed thrills, and the ability to pas so much a part of the action, the restrictor plates were gone very shortly.
The Sylvania 300 is held at the New Hampshire International Speedway, featuring a course slightly over 1 mile, its oval track has hosted NASCAR races since the early 1990s. The track was first opened in June of 1990, after 9 solid months of painstaking construction. At the time of its conception, it was the largest speedway in all of New England. NASCAR made its debut at the track in July of that year, with a Busch Series race that was won by Tommy Ellis. For 3 years, the Busch Series hosted a two of their races at the New Hampshire International Speedway every season. These high-profile races were always extremely popular and successful, leading to the New Hampshire International Speedway earning a spot on the Winston Cup circuit in 1993. Another 300 mile race was added to Loudon's already impressive racing schedule in 1997. That particular race is held in the middle of September, and in 2004, Loudon became the first race in NASCAR's "Chase for the Cup" playoff series. In 2002, an effort to increase the competitive nature of racing was made when the track's corners were turned into a progressive banking system, increasing the degree of banking as the track moved to the outer edges.
Ryan Newman returns to the track this 2006 season as a returning champion. In the Nextel Cup Series, Newman has 152 starts with 12 wins, 52 top 5's, 75 top 10's, and 35 Bud Poles. Because of the number of Bud Poles he's claimed, Newman has earned the nickname ?Rocket Man?. Fans love to watch Newman race and this year will be no different as NASCAR fans won't let anything stand in the way of their Sylvania 300 tickets.
