The 312-mile race in Phoenix on the one mile track will showcase the ability of Carl Edwards, whose dominance on the flat and intermediate tracks became well known during his 2005 rookie season. Although the tri-oval track was built in 1964, NASCAR did not begin using the facility until 1988 with the addition of the Checker Auto Parts 500 to the racing schedule. The track does not place among the sport's fastest venues; the record qualifying lap speed in Phoenix is just over 135 miles per hour, a record held by Ryan Newman. However, the track is not an easy racing arena; Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle both struggled in Phoenix last year and failed to finish the race. Defending Nextel Cup Champion Tony Stewart, known for his prowess on this kind of track, holds the Nextel race record for an average lap speed of over 118 miles per hour. However, the Columbus, Indiana native also failed to finish last year's competition.
