However, the defending champion will face strong competition from throughout the field, most notably Tony Stewart, whose ability to dominate at this type of intermediate track was cut short last year due to a collision. Veteran Ryan Newman has enjoyed a great deal of success in Texas, winning the pole last year after a first-place finish in 2003, and the 2006 Budweiser Shootout winner, rookie Denny Hamlin, will also work to prove his place among the NASCAR elite in this year's first competition in the Lone Star State.
