Pepsi 400 Information
The 400 mile NASCAR Nextel Cup stock car race held on the July 4th weekend at Daytona International Speedway is now known to fans across the country as the Pepsi 400. Fans of all ages put this race at the top of their must-see list and flood ticket sellers in a frenzy to purchase their Pepsi 400 tickets. The 160-lap event was originally begun in order to make a second major cup-level racing event for Daytona without taking away from the legendary Daytona 500. Since back in 1998 it has always been held at night by due to an impressive lighting system that functions using parabolic reflectors that allow extremely intense lighting to be focused on the track in a way that keeps the light from being directly reflected into each driver's eyes. Historically, this race was known as the Firecracker 400 and before that it was called the Firecracker 250. From 1959 to 1987, the race was always held on the 4th of July, no matter what day of the week the holiday landed on that year. But beginning in 1988, the Pepsi 400 was moved to the Saturday of the 4th of July weekend in order to bring some consistency to the scheduling of the race over the years.
The Daytona International Speedway plays host to some of NASCAR's most important and well-known races. Some of the more notable ones include competitions in the Busch Series, the Craftsman Truck Series and of course the beloved Nextel Cup Series. This track is not one to be taken lightly, due to its history of having many drivers killed in crashes on the speedway itself. Daytona's first fatality was in 1959 when Marshall Teague was killed during a practice run. Following Teague, drivers such as Slick Johnson, Bruce Jacobi, Ricky Knotts, Friday Hassler, Neil Bonnett and Rodney Orr joined him on the list of fatalities that took place in Daytona. Of course we will never forget Dale Earnhardt Senior's death in 2001 as he was killed in the final lap of the Daytona 500.
One of America's most beloved drivers, Tony Stewart, returns to the Pepsi 400 to defend his title after finishing in first place last year. Stewart holds ten racing championship wins, including two on the NASCAR Cup circuit. Overall he won five races last season and held the lead over all Nextel Cup drivers in top-fives and top-tens on the way to winning his second title in just four years. Over the past seven years Stewart has been competing in NASCAR, he has collected a staggering 24 victories, his record is second only to fellow competitor, Jeff Gordan, during that time.
NASCAR fans across the United States pour into the Daytona International Speedway every 4th of July weekend, exited beyond reason to see the Pepsi 400. Ticket sales always soar and are sold out almost immediately to all true NASCAR fans seeking Pepsi 400 tickets.
