Gatorade Duel Information

NASCAR fans should leave early for their trip to Daytona - not just to beat the inevitable traffic jam of the big race, but to celebrate the mid-week auto racing festivities of the Gatorade Duels. The first of two qualifying races for the Daytona 500, Gatorade Duel 1 occurs on the Thursday before the major race at the Daytona International Speedway. However, this competition does not simply determine who will race in the Sunday classic; the $675,000 purse provides another incentive for these drivers to deliver top-level performances. Elliot Sadler, whose qualifying speed of 188.810 earned him the third starting position in the race, finished first in the 2006 Gatorade Duel 1. The 60-lap, 150-mile race marks the second Nextel Cup restrictor plate event of the season at the track. However, the Duel does not earn points toward the ultimate goal, the Nextel Cup Championship; instead, the desire to qualify for the sport's biggest race of the season becomes the primary goal for drivers in the competition.

Initially, the Gatorade Duel 1 was half of the duo known as the Daytona Twin Qualifiers, and was only 100 miles. When each race was increased to a distance of 125 miles, fans bought tickets to a series called the Twin 125s. However, the distance was increased again in last year's race, and the second Nextel event of the season is now named the Gatorade Duel. During its first year under the new name, Michael Waltrip earned the victory. The increased length of the race increases the test for drivers hoping to earn positions in the Daytona 500, which typically occurs three days after this qualification round. Since the race's formation with the opening of the racing arena in 1959 and the subsequent running of the Daytona 500, the track in Florida has become increasingly dangerous. After recent warnings from 2005 Nextel Cup winner, Tony Stewart, that the technique of bump drafting could result in the death of one the drivers, competitors in this year's Gatorade Duel 1 were warned to drive within fair and safe boundaries. NASCAR fans know of Daytona's notoriety; the track holds the record for most number of cars in one accident, 38. However, participants in the 2006 Gatorade Duel 1 heeded the official cautions, and only six drivers failed to finish the entire race. Sadler led the final 36 laps of the race, and his victory sets the stage for another exciting Daytona 500. Because this event is a precursor to the "Super Bowl of NASCAR", Gatorade Duel tickets remain some of the hottest tickets in sports. The 168,000 seats at the Daytona International Speedway provide opportunities for the lovers of racing to witness the best drivers vying for spots in the weekend classic. Fans at the 2006 Gatorade Duel 1 witnessed the impressive performance of many veterans, including top 10 finishes from Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, and Tony Stewart. However, racing's young prodigies were the main attraction. With emerging star Carl Edwards' second place finish and rookie Denny Hamlin's proven success at this year's Duel 1, the young talent at the Gatorade Duel 1 makes this event a must-see for all NASCAR fans.
