Food City 500 Information
Held at one of the most popular tracks in the NASCAR arena, the Food City 500 is one of the most exciting races in the sport. The 500-lap, 267-mile competition is held in late March at the Bristol Motor Speedway, and few, if any, of the 160,000 seats will be empty when the race begins in 2006. Despite starting in the last position in 2005, Kevin Harvick won the race, which was the veteran's lone win during the entire season. While Kurt Busch's recent dominance at the Food City 500 makes him a favorite (Busch won the event in 2002, 2003, and 2004), fans know that the short track makes anyone a potential winner.
Measuring just over one-half mile long, Bristol's 36 degree banking turns are the steepest in any NASCAR venue. Because of this small distance, this race separates itself from the competitions that occur at the super speedway tracks. While those who start at the rear of the pack in other races have more space to make up for their initial margin, the last drivers in Bristol begin nearly half a lap behind the leader. Sight of the yellow flag is expected through much of the race; 43 cars on such a compact track increase the likelihood of wrecks. However, the track's length decreases the speeds that many fans witness at larger tracks. The fastest speed during a Nextel Cup race at Bristol belongs to Cale Yarborough, whose speed of 101 miles per hour was recorded nearly three decades ago. What this track misses in quickness, it compensates for in the intensity of the race.
Fans who hope to attend a Nextel Cup event at the Bristol Motor Speedway should get Food City 500 tickets; obtaining tickets to the second Nextel event, held at nighttime later in the season, is rumored to be nearly as difficult as finding tickets to the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Even after the addition of a new backstretch and 13,000 more seats in 2002, the track never struggles to draw a large crowd.
While Busch's success during the past few years has earned him a great deal of honor at the Food City 500, Jeff Gordon's four consecutive first-place finishes in the latter half of the 1990s should not be forgotten. The veteran's ability to control competition on the short track is well known in the racing world, and he hopes for a strong performance again in Bristol in 2006. The event will provide a test for the preseason favorite, Carl Edwards, whose finish in the bottom half of the pack in 2005 may provide proof that veteran drivers hold an edge in facing the problems that the short track can pose. NASCAR fans recognize that Food City 500 tickets present an early opportunity to view a race at one of the most thrilling venues in all of professional sports.
