Dover 400 Information
Dover 400 tickets make the ending days of September a time to mark on your calendar in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. Being held at the Dover International Speedway only makes it better. The Dover International Speedway, which carries the moniker "The Monster Mile" is different than most tracks on the NASCAR circuit. Being constructed of concrete rather than asphalt gives Dover a different feel. It is also famously jointly located with Dover Downs, one of the more popular horse racing venues in the country. The track is exactly one mile long, which ranks it at neither a superspeedway nor a short track. The track at Dover is known throughout NASCAR as being notoriously hard on cars, which is what earned it its nickname "The Monster Mile".
Dover has a rich history; even the past five years are impressive. In 2001 Dover marked the 16th consecutive year of having the largest capacity of any sporting arena in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. In 2002, Dover Motorsports, Inc. was created to exclusively oversee racing at the Dover, St. Louis, Memphis, and Nashville racetracks. In 2003 Ryan Newman swept both Winston Cup races to become the third racer in the last four years to accomplish the feat. 2003 was also the year that, after 33 years as the title sponsor, Winston stepped down and allowed Nextel to take over as the title sponsor. In 2004 the already notorious track was made even more impressive as the DuPont Monster Bridge, a glass structure that sits directly over the track was opened for the first time. The one-of-a-kind structure is constantly referred to as being the most exciting seat in sports. Last year's returning champion, Jimmie Johnson, is eager to prove himself once again on the asphalt this fall. Johnson is intent on making sure he is taken seriously as his record speaks for himself. Last year he began a string of six straight finishes of sixth or better to close his award-winning season, not to mention winning four events during that run, which placed him within eight points of a series title. Johnson became only the second driver to claim the checkered flag in three straight major NASCAR events. Johnson has always been an impressive driver; he began his racing career in quite a few off-road leagues including SODA, SCORE International and MTEG. Over the years he has notched over 25 wins and 100 top-three finishes, not to mention receiving Rookie of the Year honors in all three leagues. By 2000, Johnson was driving for Herzog Motorsports, finishing at #10 in the NASCAR points standings and 3rd in the run for Rookie of the Year. Johnson got his first victory in a Busch Series race in 2001 and solidified his reputation as a driver to content with on the track. No true NASCAR fan will be able to refuse the opportunity to get their Dover 400 tickets.
