Bank of America 500 Information

The Bank of America 500 is traditionally held at the Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, just north of Charlotte, North Carolina. The Lowe's Motor Speedway was the first major race track to host night races, and was also the first motor speedway to offer condominiums that overlook the race track. These condominiums offer motor race fans the same luxury that has been afforded to avid golfers for decades-the ability to live right where you play.

"Bank of America 500" is a new name for this race. Through the 2005 race, this autumn drive was called the "UAW (United Auto Workers Union)-GM (General Motors) Quality 500." Bank of America became the new sponsor in early 2006. The Bank of America 500 has had its share of coordination problems. Originally scheduled for Sunday afternoons, the race traditionally ran late creating line-up problems for NBC and race viewers. The Bank of American 500 was moved to Saturday evenings, which seemed to work well for fans (they didn't mind staying up to watch as most did not have to be at work the next morning), but the race had problems in 2005 when it was asked to start late due to a Notre-Dame football game that went into overtime. The 2006 Bank of America 500 race is currently scheduled to be shown on NBC on Saturday, October 14 with race coverage beginning at 7 p.m. The ABC television company has a new contract with the Bank of America 500 race, and the 2007 race schedule has yet to be set as ABC is considering moving its NASCAR programming to an ESPN affiliate. Driver Jimmie Johnson won the Bank of America 500 in 2005, coming in at 336 laps and a grand total of 504 miles. This win bumped Jimmie Johnson up three (3) notches in his Nextel Cup standing to second (2nd) place. Jimmie Johnson had won the Bank of American/UAW-GM Quality 500 in 2004, for a total of two (2) consecutive wins. The very first Bank of America 500 (UAW-GM Quality 400) race was called the National 400 and was held in 1960. Driver Speedy Thompson was the victor for that inaugural drive. In 1966 the race added 100 miles to transform from the National (Bank of America/UAW-GM Quality) 400 to the National (Bank of American/UAW-GM Quality) 500. LeeRoy Yarborough was the victor. While the distance has only changed once from 400 miles to 500 miles in 1966, the Bank of American 500 has had eight (8) previous titles. Originally known as the National 400, then the National 500, the race was known as the NAPA (auto parts) National 500 from 1977 to 1979. 1983 through 1985 saw the race called the "Miller High Life 500," when the name again changed, this time to the Oakwood Homes 500. Oakwood Homes held the sponsorship title until 1989 when the race became the All Pro Auto Parts 500. The sponsorship title was then held by Mello Yello (Mello Yello 500) from 1990 through 1994. The dual sponsorship title UAW-GM Quality 500 lasted from 1995 through 2005, when the sponsorship title was lost to Bank of America, giving the race a new name to go with its new time and television schedule.
