| World Series tickets are enough to capture the imagination of any sports fans and send him (or her) reeling and spinning down a path of memory and possibility. When it’s all said and done, and the season has boiled down to two teams and a set of games that will decide glory or heartbreak, the movie reel in the heads of fans and players alike begins to spin. It’s a vision of what could happen, what lies at the end of the long road to the World Series, and the unforgettable moments that were available to the lucky few who’ve gotten their hands on World Series tickets.
October 15, 1988: The LA Dodgers are matched up against the Oakland Athletics in Game 1 of the World Series. LA is trailing the heavily favored Athletics 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th inning. There are two outs and a single runner on first base. It’s the Dodgers last chance. Winning this first game of the series is crucial to prevent Oakland from getting momentum. Kirk Gibson, who is suffering from a badly injured leg and can barely walk, somehow convinces manager Tommy Lasorda to let him pinch hit. After hobbling to the plate, Gibson starts out 0-2 and works Dennis Eckersley to a full count. Finally, in an almost surreal moment, Gibson turns on a pitch and sends it sailing over the wall of right field in Dodgers Stadium. LA wins Game 1 and goes on to win the World Series in 5 games. It was Gibson’s only at-bat in the Series but it propelled the Dodgers to a World Championship.
