| Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby tickets are an exciting way to spend an evening watching the best hitters in baseball turned loose. There’s no umpire to contend with, no opposing pitcher, just ball after ball spoon fed to players with power and style. It’s no wonder that Home Run Derby tickets are more difficult to get your hands on than most baseball tickets. But that won’t be a problem for you. You’re just a click away from Home Run Derby tickets.
Major league Baseball initiated the Home Run Derby in 1985 and the event has proven to be a winner, generating tons of interest by baseball fans. Eight players are picked to compete in the Home Run Derby. When it was first initiated four players each from the American League and the National League were taken. In later years the format was changed to use players from different countries providing a neat tie in to the World Baseball Classic. The players are pitted against each other in a playoff style contest with the winners advancing. Each hitter is given 10 outs before elimination, each out being anything less than a home run. In the event of a tie between the two players the tiebreaker reverts to the players performance in the regular season or the distance of the longest home run.
One of the newer elements of the Home Run Derby is the use of The Golden Ball. After reaching nine outs a golden ball is used. If a home run is hit using the golden ball the sponsosr of the event, Century 21 and Major league Baseball, team up to contribute $21,000 per home run. This twist to the event has resulted in contributions of $294,000 to charities in both 2005 and 2006.
Fans with Home Run Derby tickets have seen some great performances by some of the premiere athletes in the game. Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs won in 2000 with 26 home runs while Ken Griffey Jr. has won the Home Run Derby three times, his first in 1994 and then back-to-back wins in 1998 and 1999. Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants, currently chasing the home run record of Henry Aaron, won the Home Run Derby in 1996. Other notable winners are Mark McGwire (Oakland Athletics, 1992) and Cal Ripken Jr. (Baltimore Orioles, 1991). Dave Parker of the Cincinnati Reds was the first winner in 1985 while Wally Joyner and Darryl Strawberry shared the title in 1986. Bobby Abreu of the Philadelphia Phillies tops the totals list with 41 home runs.
