| Team Information
For the first time in recent history, Detroit Tigers are enjoying resurgence in popularity among Major League Baseball fans. Throughout the previous decade, fans have grown accustomed to a team that always manages to sink to the doldrums of the American League Central Division. In Jim Leyland’s first season as head coach of the team, the spring of 2006 looks promising. Right fielder Magglio Ordonez is in his second year with the Tigers, and his bat packs a powerful punch in the cleanup position. If the Tigers can avoid the injuries that caused the team’s struggles in 2005, look for them to make their first playoff appearance since 1987.
While the Tigers home field struggles after years of losing have been well-documented among baseball fans. After seven World Series appearances in the first half of the century, the Tigers’ success waned. Some glimmers of hope appeared in the Motor City at Tiger Stadium; under the management of Sparky Anderson during the 1980s and early 1990s, the Tigers built a tradition of winning seasons and earned a World Series title in 1984. After Anderson’s departure, the team struggled through the last decade of the millennium. Even with hefty hitter Cecil Fielder in the lineup, Tigers sales were mediocre. With the building of Comerica Park in 2000 and a revamping of the franchise’s lineup, the Tigers have been gradually working toward a return to baseball’s elite.
With the Tigers exciting lineup that includes storied veterans such as catcher Ivan Rodriguez and shortstop Carlos Guillen, offer fans a glimpse into the return of a tradition of excellence in Michigan. Young first baseman Chris Shelton appears to be one of the game’s most promising stars, and his performance in early 2006 marks him as one of the hottest hitters in professional baseball. While the presence of the defending champion in the same division makes the Tigers return to the postseason a seemingly uphill battle, the pitching staff, which includes standout starters Kenny Rogers and Mike Maroth, appears ready for the challenge.
