| Team Information
Tampa Bay answers the question, "How much talent can a team have and still finish last in their division?" The Devil Rays won only 67 games last year despite fielding a team of potential superstars. But when you’ve got that much talent on the roster it doesn’t take a whole lot of tweaking to turn things around. We can look forward to better times in 2007 as the Devil Rays try to take better advantage of their talent and simply play better baseball. With Joe Maddon taking the reins as the manager things should get better. Maddon is known as a tickler for details and he’ll have the young squad focusing on the fundamentals, the things that turn losses into wins. Just improving on the basics should give the Devil Rays a few more victories after they finished last in the American league in fielding percentage.
Defensively the Devil Rays will be depending on left-hander Scott Kazmir to pick things up. There’s been some talk about leaving Kazmir further down in the rotation to ease the pressure on his psyche but Maddon won’t play that game long. Kazmir can hum the ball at 97 mph and his fastball is hard to get hold off with it’s late movement. His control of his pitches, which include a slider and a changeup, is improving so it’s time for Kazmir to take command in the Rays rotation. Mark Hendrickson, another lefty, doesn’t have overpowering speed but his command is good enough to work the edges of the plate and get called strikes. The third arm in the Rays left handed attack is Casey Fossum. Fossum won only 8 games last year and needs to step it up in 2006 to stay in the rotation. If he can’t, right-hander Seth McClung is coming back from surgery and will take over the spot.
On offense The Rays will enjoy the services of the improving left fielder Carl Crawford. Crawford had career marks in 2005, batting .301 and delivering 81 RBI. Crawford is also a major threat once he gets on base, stealing 46 times in 2005. Along with 2nd baseman Jorge Cantu (.286, 28 HR), and center fielder Rocco Baldelli, Crawford should spearhead an improved Rays offense in the 2006 MLB season.
Rays games will have more to offer in 2007 than they have in the past. There’s nowhere to go but up and the talent is there to make things exciting. With home stands against the best opponents viewers get to enjoy a young team on the rise as the Rays take on the more established veterans in the MLB.
