| Team Information
If you talk to a Milwaukee Brewer fan, at least the more cautious sort, he’ll tell you his team is at least another year away from serious contention. However, the majority of those that attend Milwaukee Brewers games expect serious results in 2007. Last year’s 81-81 finish, though not overwhelming, served notice that this club is ready to take the next important step into the postseason. It’s understandable that there is a certain level of excitement around town. Wisconsin features great sports fans and one has to root for them considering all the heartbreak they’ve experienced.
There’s a certain generation of Brewers fans that figures the Braves always played their game in Georgia. Many don’t realize how the older generation suffered when their hearts were ripped from their chests the day the Atlanta team left town. It took a few years but MLB made good on that injustice by allowing the Seattle Pilots to move to town after one year in the Great Northwest. The Brewers began play in 1970 and didn’t finish above break even until 1978 and they made their first post season appearance in 1981. That was a period that featured an incredible array of sluggers, including Gorman Thomas, Larry Hisle and Cecil Cooper. Two youngsters by the names of Yount and Molitor arrived on the scene as well. Excitement was the daily bill of faire at Old County Stadium in those years.
The Brewers made it to the World Series in 1982, losing to the St. Louis. The Brew Crew never sniffed the postseason again and the last decade has been especially tough. Brewer pitching needs to improve for them to make the playoffs in 2006. Chris Capuano is tough but either Doug Davis or Ben Sheets needs to take the next step. Tomo Ohka is back in the fold as well and can be of some help. The bullpen seems to be well attended with Derrick Turnbow returning after a 39-save effort last year. Offensively, Carlos Lee will again provide most of the pop. Prince Fielder will be at first base and has the potential to equal the output of Lee and then some. Geoff Jenkins and Brady Clark are good with the bat as well.
Brewers General Mangers Doug Melvin and Manager Ned Yost have positioned the team to make a move in the National League Central. Fans will be keeping their fingers crossed that the long playoff drought is over. It will take improvement in critical areas but this may the year the Brewers Crew breaks through once again.
