San Diego Padres Team Info

The Padres joined the brotherhood of MLB in 1969 and they finished their inaugural season at 52-110. Then, what do you expect from a team featuring such forgettables as Rafael Robles, Ed Spezio and Larry Stahl? The most noteworthy event in early Padres history was the purchase of the team by McDonalds kingpin Ray Kroc. In so doing, Kroc prevented the Padres from skipping town and moving. Fans have had the good fortune to enjoy some pretty good talent through the years. Dave Winfield, Tony Gwynn and Trevor Hoffman have plied their trade in front of the Padre faithful. Of course, Ozzie Smith started out as a Padres player and ended up in Cooperstown.

The Padres won the NL West with an 82-80 record and even though those numbers aren’t impressive, a title is a title. The NL West is competitive in that any team has a chance to capture the crown; the problem heretofore is the teams therein haven’t been very good. That’s something that GM Kevin Towers wants to change. Towers brought in Shawn Estes and Chris young to bolster their pitching staff. Now at first glance that may not excite you, but when it comes to pitching you bring in some arms and hope they pan out. Jake Peavy is the ace and all good things flow from his performance. Offensively, Towers is counting on the arrival of Mike Piazza to juice up the offense. He’s hoping for a similar result from Vinny Castilla and Mike Cameron.

Can Bruce Bochy get these Padres back to the post season? Fans are hoping he can.
