What impresses about Campbell's U.S. Open win last year at Pinehurst #2 is his final round 69. Many golfers succumb to final round pressure, especially when Tiger Woods is in position to make the day his own. Campbell matched Woods in the Open that day while more illustrious players like Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen and Sergio Garcia were getting most of the attention, Campbell and his workmanlike approach won the day. In so doing, he became the first New Zealander to win the storied tournament.
Bobby Jones won the 1930 US Open at Minneapolis' Interlachen when, after a double bogey at 17, he birdied the 18th by holing a forty feet putt for his fourth and final Open championship. Jones, who never turned pro, won the U.S. Golf Amateur later that year. Tom Watson's victory at Pebble Beach in 1982 produced one of television sports most famous highlights. Watson, the Stanford University alum was most familiar with Pebble Beach, having played it many times as an amateur. On the Open's final day, Watson was battling Jack Nicklaus and Bill Rogers for his first Open win. By the time Watson reached the 17th he was tied with The Golden Bear, playing in the group ahead while Rogers had faded and was out of contention.
