After winning two of the last three Music City Bowls, the Big Ten Conference will make one more appearance at the Coliseum in Nashville, Tenn., before heading pack out to the ever-changing landscape of the NCAA's bowl season. But in the 2006 Music City Bowl, one of the Big Ten's top programs will try to leave the conference's mark. With one the Atlantic Coast Conference's best on the opposing sideline, it won't be easy, though. The 2006 Music City Bowl kicks off at noon on December 29 and will feature an ACC team for the first time. The SEC will not be represented for the first time in Music City Bowl history.
Last year, the Minnesota Gophers needed a last-minute touchdown to escape the Alabama Crimson Tide. In the 2003 Music City Bowl, the Auburn Tigers treated the SEC faithful to a glimpse of what was to come the following year. Future NFL first-round draft picks Carnell "Cadillac" Williams and Ronnie Brown led Tommy Tuberville's Auburn squad to a 28-14 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers. The Tigers followed that victory with an undefeated season and victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies in the BCS Sugar Bowl.
In the inaugural 1998 Music City Bowl a Michael Vick-led Virginia Tech squad squashed the Crimson Tide 38-7. The following season, the Hokies marched all the way into the BCS National Championship Game in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. The Syracuse Orangemen, the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Boston College Golden Eagles have also posted victories at the Music City Bowl. The Atlantic Coast Conference will replace the Big Ten in the 2006 game.
