Event Information
The Independence Bowl turns 31 this year and will celebrate on December 27 with a showdown between powerhouse programs from the Southeastern and Big 12 at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, La. The inaugural Independence Bowl was played in 1976 and was named in honor of America's bicentennial year.
In the beginning, the Independence Bowl featured the champion from the Division I-AA Southland Conference against an at-large foe. McNeese State bested Tulsa in the first Independence Bowl. Beginning in 1981, the Independence Bowl would switch participants adding two Division I-A teams from across the nation.
For the last decade, the SEC has ruled the Independence Bowl, winning nine straight. Not enough SEC teams were bowl eligible (6 wins) last season, and the streak ended with the Iowa State Cyclones 17-14 victory over the Miami of Ohio Red Hawk. The Mississippi Rebels are responsible for three of the SEC's recent triumphs, including consecutive wins in 1998 and 1999. Former NFL All-Pro running back Deuce McAllister led the Rebels past Bob Stoops' Oklahoma Sooners in the '88 Independence Bowl. Following that loss, the Sooners won 15 consecutive games and won the BCS National Champion.
But the most memorable Independence Bowl came on New Year's Eve in 2000. A rare but beautiful blizzard dumped several feet of snow and turned the Independence Bowl field into a winter wonderland. Like little kids playing the snow, the Mississippi Bulldogs and Texas A&M Aggies marched up and down the white field, combining for a bowl-record 84 points. Mississippi State prevailed in overtime, 43-41.
