From candy canes to pineapples, the fourth annual Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24, will treat college football fans with unique tropical holiday atmosphere to watch their favorite team from Conference USA take on the host and two-time defending champion Hawaii Warrior Rainbows. The 2006 Hawaii Bowl will be played on Christmas Eve at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu on the Island of Oahu and be televised by ESPN. This will be the second consecutive year that the game has been played on Christmas Eve. The first two Hawaii Bowls were played on Christmas Day. The Hawaii Bowl is the only non-all-star, post-season college football game played in Hawaii, dating back to 2000, when the Oahu and Aloha Bowls were still in existence.
The Rainbow Warriors, led by head coach June Jones, have participated in each of the Hawaii Bowls. Last year, quarterback Timmy Chung set an all-time record en route to defeating the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Chang became the first collegiate quarterback to pass for more than 17,000 yards in a career. He threw for 405 yards and four touchdowns and ran for a score. Despite the gaudy numbers, Chang had an even better day in the 2003 Hawaii Bowl. In a triple-overtime thriller, Chang completed 26 of 42 attempts for 475 yards and five touchdowns to help Hawaii nip the Houston Cougars 54-48. The Rainbow Warriors will be looking for unprecedented third consecutive bowl victory at the 2006 Sheraton Hotels Hawaii Bowl.
