Event Information
For college football fans, it doesn't get much better than a holiday showdown between two of the nation's elite programs from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference. That's exactly what the 2006 Peach Bowl will provide, an ACC-SEC battle for the ages. Last year, the Miami Hurricanes took on instate rival, the Florida Gators. Led by senior quarterback Brock Berlin and dynamic kick returned Devin Hester, Larry Coker's Hurricanes roared past lame-duck coach Ron Zook and the Gators, 27-10. The Maryland Terrapins, Clemson Tigers, North Carolina Tar Heels and the LSU Tigers have each carried home the Peach Bowl Trophy this century.
The 2006 Peach Bowl will kick off for the 38th time at 7:30 p.m., EST, on December 30 at the Georgia Dome. Before arriving at the Georgia Dome in 1993, the game originally was played at Grant Field on the campus of Georgia Tech University. A 12-year stint at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium preceded the move inside the Georgia Dome, located only minutes away from the heart of downtown Atlanta.
On Dec. 30, 1968, the LSU Tigers and Florida State Seminoles met at Grant Field inside historic Bobby Dodd Stadium for the inaugural Peach Bowl. The Tigers and 'Noles would create the Peach Bowl's reputation for thrilling finishes. After a back-and-forth contest, the Tigers from Baton Rouge would nip Florida State 31-28. Army's 31-28 upset of Illinois in the 1985 Peach Bowl and the Georgia Bulldogs' 35-33 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers in the 1998 Peach Bowl are just two more examples on a long list of memorable college football games.
