Event Information
With seven name changes since its inception in 1990, the Champs Sport Bowl heads into its 16th season of post-season NCAA college football. The 2006 Champs Bowl will kick off on Dec. 29 at Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Fla. For the fourth consecutive season, the game will feature a Big 12-Atlantic Coast Conference match-up. In the 2004 Champs Sport Bowl, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets overwhelmed the Syracuse Orangemen 51-14. It was third consecutive year that the winner scored at least 50 points. Behind NFL first-round draft pick, quarterback Phillip Rivers, the North Carolina State Wolf Pack manhandled the Kansas Jayhawks 56-26 in 2003. In 2002, the high-flying Texas Tech Red Raiders routed the Clemson Tigers 55-15. North Carolina State and the Miami Hurricanes are the only two-time winners.
Originally named the Blockbuster Bowl, the game was played at Miami's Pro Players Stadium for the first 10 years. The game has been played in January three times, but is normally slated for the last week in December. The inaugural bowl featured a pair of college football coaching legends in Florida State's Bobby Bowden and Penn State's Joe Paterno. Later in their careers, Bowden and Paterno would climb to the top of college football's all-time wins list. The Seminoles would get the best of the Nittany Lions, 24-17 in the 1990 Blockbuster Bowl. Before moving to Citrus Bowl Stadium in 2000, the bowl game also was known as the Carquest Bowl, MicronPC Bowl. In recent years, the game has been called the Visit Florida Tangerine Bowl and the Mazda Tangerine Bowl.
