Event Information
Widespread Panic, a Southern rock band blended with blues and jazz, was one of the many bands that seemed to catch their big break after the breakthrough of the Grateful Dead. The band was established in 1983 with vocalist John Bell, guitarist Mike Houser, and bassist Dave Schools and soon after, the band picked up drummer Todd Nance, percussionist Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz, and keyboardist John “JoJo” Hermann. The band released their debut LP entitled “Space Wrangler” in 1988 and signed with Capricorn in 1991. The band had made their name known mostly through touring and performing on stage at numerous venues and they only increased their popularity in 1992 and 1993 by appearing on the H.O.R.D.E. tours. The band went back into the studio in the early 1990s to record a number of albums including 1993’s “Everyday” and 1994’s “Ain’t Life Grand.” The latter gave the band their first two hit singles in “Can’t Get High” and “Airplane” and they followed up their success with “Bombs and Butterflies” in 1997.
The 2002 summer tour was one the band seemed especially excited to get started but a month in, founding member and guitarist Mike Houser left the band and returned home to Athens, Georgia, to battle the pancreatic cancer that had invaded his body. Guitarist George McConnell stepped in to finish the tour but the tour finished on a somber note as Houser passed away on August 10, 2002. McConnell became the permanent replacement and the band continued on as Houser had requested by releasing “Ball” in April of 2003 and following it up with “Uber Cobra” and “Night of Joy” in March of 2004. House of Joy was the first album that featured live performances since Another Joyous Occasion with the live shows coming from their performances at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach.
