Event Information
U2, a four-man band out of Dublin, Ireland, formed in 1976 and started as a rock/punk bad as many of the surrounding bands were doing at the same time. U2 was made up of Bono (born Paul Hewson) on vocals, Adam Clayton on bass, The Edge (born David Evans) on guitar and keyboards, and Larry Mullen Jr. on drums. The band, with each member still in high school, won a talent contest in 1978 before signing on with manager Paul McGuinness. McGuinness helped the band release their debut EP “U2 Three” which was very successful in Ireland but had trouble selling elsewhere. After some trouble signing with a big name record agency, the group finally came to terms with Island Records who helped the band release “Boy” and “October” in the early 80s.
The next two albums that U2 released would both debut at number one in Britain and would almost achieve top ten status in America. Each album came with political and religious messages that were easy to understand and helped the band gain more notoriety before the Band-Aid and Live-Aid concerts in the mid-1980s. “The Joshua Tree” album was number one all over the world, even being certified platinum in England in only 28 hours, and included hits like “With or Without You” and“I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” After the release of The Joshua Tree, the band took a break for almost three years before joining up again in 1990.
