Event Information
Toby Keith Covel was born in 1961 in Clinton, Oklahoma, and was surrounded by music at a young age. Like many musicians, he picked up the guitar at the age of eight but he was able to perform in his grandmother’s restaurant as a teenager. After graduating from high school and legally changing his name to “Toby Keith,” he tried out for the USFL football league’s team near Oklahoma City and after a few years with little success, he decided to give his attention to music full-time. After recording a demo tape, he sent it out and was eventually signed by Mercury. Keith was fortunate to avoid some of the troubles associated with jumping into the music business as his self-titled debut in 1993 gave him an instant hit in “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.” The album also featured three more songs that would make the country top five and the album ended up selling better than two million copies.
After the attacks that took place on September 11th, many became more patriotic and outspoken, but Keith was one of the few that stepped to the forefront. Keith recorded “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" as a response to the attacks, a song that the die-hard patriots of the country embraced like few ever had before. In preparation for a Fourth of July concert, ABC pulled the plug last minute on a scheduled performance but the media attention only helped Keith’s upcoming album sell even better. Released in 2002, “Unleashed” debuted at number one on the country charts and the pop charts and included the hit singles “Who’s Your Daddy?” and “Beer For My Horses,” the latter being a duet with the legendary Willie Nelson.
