Event Information
Sting, whose real name is Gordon Matthew Sumner, was born on October 2, 1951, in Wallsend, England. Sting grew up in music and was involved in some smaller musical groups at a young age before helping to form The Police in 1977. Prior to the formation of the band, Sting had been in England digging ditches, teaching, and working on jazz-rock bands, but upon meeting Stewart Copeland, who would become the keyboardist, he knew there was an instant connection. The band teamed up with guitarist Henri Padovani and released their first single “Fall Out” which would sell more than 70,000 copies. The band replaced Padovani with Andy Summers and went on to tour America out of a rented van. After a few somewhat successful singles in England, the band made it big with their single “Message in a Bottle” and the album “Reggatta de Blanc” in the fall of 1979.
His solo debut, 1985’s “The Dream of the Blue Turtles,” was heavily influenced by jazz and featured appearances by legends like Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland, and Omar Hakim. Sting’s next two albums were dedicated to the passing of his mother and father and his next big success came in 1994 with the release of “Fields of Gold: The Best of Sting.” Mercury Falling followed in 1996 and was followed three years later by “Brand New Day.” More recently, he released “All This Time” in 2001 and“Inside: The Songs of Sacred Love” followed in 2003.
