Event Information
Sarah McLachlan was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on January 28, 1968, and, like many other successful musicians of this era, took vocal training along with guitar and classical piano lessons. McLachlan also was quite involved in her study of art while working with smaller bands before being approached about the possibility of a solo career. McLachlan moved to Vancouver in 1987 and released her debut album “Touch” in 1988. McLachlan followed that up in 1991 with Solace after she had signed on with Arista Records and then began to come into her own as a songwriter and a singer. McLachlan’s next album wouldn’t be released until 1993 after many months in a Montreal house where she was on her own reflecting on her experiences up to that point. The touching lyrics were evident upon the release of “Fumbling Toward Ecstasy” which included the hit single “Possession.” The album stayed on the charts for longer than a year and eventually rose all the way to #50 on the US charts while being certified platinum. After releasing a few fillers in the United States and Canada, McLachlan was finally ready to release what would be her biggest masterpiece to that point in 1997 with “Surfacing.” The album peaked at number two on the charts behind the success of the massive hit “Building a Mystery” and continued to show her growth as an adult contemporary performer. McLachlan also had arguably her biggest hit when she recorded the theme song for the film Brothers McMullen. The track, “I Will Remember You,” received incredible air play and helped McLachlan establish herself even further. For all her talents and successes, McLachlan might best be known for her efforts in establishing the Lilith Fair in the mid 1990s. The tour was established to give up and coming female singers and songwriters the chance to experience life on the road and to give them the opportunity to learn from more established female performers in the business. In 1999, McLachlan released “Mirrorball” which would eventually be certified multi-platinum. Mirrorball was the chronicles of the tour, including candid interviews with many of the participants, and also featured the first live release from McLachlan. In 2003, McLachlan followed it with the successful “Afterglow” and accompanying live album.
