Event Information
Although she’s only 20 years old, it’s tough to argue that no matter what Kelly Clarkson accomplishes in the music business, she’ll always be the answer to a trivia question. That question, of course, would be something along the lines of “Who was the winner of Fox TV’s inaugural season of ‘American Idol’ in 2002?” Clarkson, originally from Burleson, Texas, had developed her singing talent since she was in the seventh grade and sang through high school. After school, she went down the same road as so many aspiring musicians and traveled to Hollywood in the hopes of making it big. After things didn’t work out for her, she made her way back to her hometown and worked at many of the typical jobs for a person of her age.
She worked as a waitress at a comedy club before Clarkson heard about the American Idol auditions. The judges loved the combination of her booming voice and southern charm and she was one of the few to advance through the rounds. Over the course of the 13-week show, she was never really in danger of being voted off the show because her performances were consistently among the best week in and week out. As the field narrowed, Clarkson continued to garner her fair share of the fan vote and eventually, she was in a showdown with her counterpart Justin Guarini. Clarkson’s two songs, written especially for the show, were “A Moment Like This” and “Before Your Love” and after nailing both performances, she won the contest with 58% of the vote.
