Event Information
Although the Beastie Boys originally set out to be the first big name hardcore punk band of their time, they eventually became so much more as the first white rap group to make it in music. Mike D (born Mike Diamond on November 20, 1966), MCA (Adam Yauch, August 5, 1965), and Ad-Rock (Adam Horovitz, October 31, 1967) all came from wealthy middle-class Jewish families in New York so their involvement in the punk and rap scene might have raised a few eyebrows and their early work only confirmed that they didn't have much musical talent. That fact, however, certainly didn't stop them from being one of the biggest acts in music.
The Beastie Boys were signed by Def Jam in 1985 and were included on tours that featured Madonna and Run-D.M.C. before their debut album "Licensed to Ill" was released in 1986. Although most of the critics and conservatives felt it was obnoxious and irritating, the band had a huge crossover hit with "Fight For Your Right (To Party)" and became one of the fastest-selling debuts in music after selling 750,000 albums in just under six weeks. The criticism for the Licensed to Ill album continued until the end of the decade which only helped sales and pushed the album to make it the top selling rap album of the 80s. After an ugly lawsuit with Def Jam, the band finally broke away to California and signed with Capitol Records and worked with the Dust Brothers on their second album, Paul's Boutique. The style of the album could not have been more different than their debut and although it received great reviews from numerous publications, fans were quite as receptive and the top single, "Hey Ladies".
