Team Information and History
Last year took its toll on the Red Storm as they were forced to play with a shortened roster. Players pushed themselves through pain and injuries, determined to finish out the season strong. Head coach Norm Roberts leaned heavily on his team, especially stars like Daryll Hill and Lamont Hamilton. Four players averaged 30 minutes or more of time per game out of sheer necessity and St. John never looked better. This year the fatigue of his players doesn’t concern Roberts as he has a larger roster and his seasoned starters proved their abilities. Fans of the Red Storm are eager to see just what Roberts has in store for them as they hurry to purchase their St. John’s basketball tickets.
Their combination of increased depth and a high level of experience should help St. John yield the results they want this season. In the frontcourt, Hamilton is who everyone will be watching for even more flashes of stardom, is finally joined this season by the frontcourt help he desperately needed last season. Incoming freshman Anthony Mason is touted as being one of the best athletes on the team. Junior post player Aaron Spears will be able to add his expertise to Hamilton. Freshman center Tomas Jasiulionis is a gem who appears to be just as comfortable on the perimeter as he is under the basket. The only returning frontcourt player besides Hamilton is Ryan Williams, a senior who also saw an extreme amount of playing time last season. Jermaine Maybank could break into a star position as small forward, being cheated out of most of the season last year due to his torn patella tendon.
In the backcourt Hill should once again be one of the Big East’s top scorers, making headlines last season as St. John’s most impressive player. Hill ended up being third in the Big East in scoring 20.7 points per game while averaging 3.5 assists and 3.3 rebounds. Hill has scored 960 points in 54 career games for the Red Storm and last season he went for 20 points or more 17 times and topped the 30 point mark on more than once occasion. Three sophomore guards are helping to bulk up the backcourt this season in Eugene Lawrence, Dexter Gray and Cedric Jackson, all who have started over 20 games. Freshman Ricky Torres is notorious for his three point shot and will be able to add much-needed expertise to the perimeter for St. John.
Roberts has proven himself to be an excellent coach who can get the most of his team and this year he has an exceptional core group of athletes to usher St. John into the Big East tournament schedule. The Red Storm somehow found a way to address every single one of its needs in its incoming freshmen class. Fans across the nation are ordering their St. John basketball tickets to watch the Red Storm.
