The Sugar Bowl was born in 1935. Tulane held off Temple 20-13 to win the first game. It was the beginning of a New Year's tradition in New Orleans. Year after year, Sugar Bowl ticket holders are rewarded with thrilling games between teams from college football's top conferences. Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett rushed for 202 yards to lead the Panthers past Vince Dooley's Bulldogs. Led by Hershall Walker, Georgia would bounce back to beat Notre Dame in the 1981 Sugar Bowl. The 2002 Sugar Bowl featured a pair of explosive offenses in LSU and Illinois. Tiger quarterback Rohan Davey and the Fighting Illini's Kurt Kittner tossed seven touchdown passes combined.
In the 1979 Sugar Bowl, a pair of Hall of Fame coaches in Penn State's Joe Paterno and Alabama's Paul “Bear” Bryant squared off in a classic showdown that would be decided by a single yard.
With both team's boasting stingy defenses, the game was a low-scoring, hard-fought confrontation. Late in the fourth quarter, Paterno's top-ranked Nittany Lions trailed Bryant's Crimson Tide by seven. Penn State quarterback Chuck Fusina marched the team down inside the Alabama one-yard line. “How close is it?” asked Fusina before fourth down. “About an inch,” replied linebacker Marty Lions. “You better pass.” Paterno didn't listen to the Tide linebacker's suggestion and called tailback Mike Gunman's number. Linebacker Barry Krause leveled Gunman for no gain to help the Tide prevail, 14-7.
